We had our first volunteer last week. A friend from Eastborne came to help out for the day. We had lots of things to do but as Ewan was also down for the break the three of us decided to tackle the stream and the bridge area that links the pastures and woodland to the properties. Just near the bridge there is a pond and already ducks are settleng there. We have 6 ducks: two males and four females. There is also a white duck which tags along with the group. We are not sure yet if they are nesting there as a lot of the island in the pond is overgrown, ( another job later on) so we cannot see clearly, but we think they are not. However they do come up on the lawn to eat. Yesterday Carolyn saw two deer cross over the stream and walk up the pasture into the woodland. Wonderful.
But we digress. The stream around the bridge has bugged me since we moved in but it is a large task. There was a huge ammount of rubbish to move (watch the video) and we have not yet finished. There is a least another days work there. Along the banks wild garlic was struggling with the undergrowth and the trees to survive, so we have also cut back a lot but only did about 15 out of over 150 metres of stream so a long way to go.
On another front - the veg is doing well. We have a steady suppy of salads each day. Just had some for lunch! We have planted, potatoes, peas, onions and garlic. Have tended the fruit trees, unfortuantly the Peach trees have leaf curl so a lot had to be cut off. This migh mean little if any friut this year.
Other things are happening, grss cutting and more planting and clearing so if you are inspired after reading and watching the video to spend a day helping with us - just contact us and enjoy the fun and a good lunch.
